Greifswald Christmas market in the historic old town
November 27 – December 20, 2025 | Marketplace | admission free
The heart of the Advent season is the Christmas market on the market square in Greifswald. Festively decorated wooden stalls and sparkling fir lights fit into the medieval brick ensemble of the historic old town. Between the scent of roasted almonds and fir green, visitors can browse for Christmas gifts and end the evening with a cup of mulled wine. The Christmas market will take place this year with special consideration of the rules of distance and hygiene.
Arrival of Santa Claus in the Museum Harbour
According to good old tradition, Santa Claus arrives in the Hanseatic city of Greifswald on a sailing ship on the first Sunday of Advent. When he arrives at the museum harbor, he is greeted by trumpets and a shower of stars and hands out all kinds of sweets from his large jute sack. He then rides up to the market in a carriage with his entourage, where the fir lights are lit and the Christmas market is ceremoniously opened.
