Greifswald Bach Week

The Festival of Sacred Music in the North

The Greifswald Bach Week, which takes place annually in June, is the oldest music festival in Mecklenburg-West Pomerania. Founded in 1946, today it is an integral part of the cultural calendar of the university and Hanseatic city of Greifswald with over 10.000 visitors to more than forty concerts and other events. The sponsor of the Greifswald Bach Week is the Evangelical North Church in cooperation with the University of Greifswald and in cooperation with the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, the Hanseatic City of Greifswald and the Pomeranian Church District as supporters.

The Romantic period was also a time of rediscovery of Bach's music. The Bach Week would like to remember this musical environment of Caspar David Friedrich. Greifswald, Copenhagen and Dresden, the three stages of the painter's life, determine the program. Romantic events include the concert of the Dresden Kreuzchor, a CDF evening in the cathedral, the song afternoon in Starkow, chamber music in the greenhouse of the Botanical Garden and the evening serenade in the Greifswald city harbor. The highlight is the performance of Bach's St. Matthew Passion in Mendelssohn Bartholdy's version. In addition, as usual, there are daily spiritual morning music, afternoon, evening and night concerts, lectures, children's and youth concerts - and of course the invitation to take part in the sing-along projects!
