Thatched fishermen's cottages and rustic fish restaurants

The tranquil, approx. 800-year-old fishing village of Wieck is a district of Greifswald and is around 5 km outside the city center at the mouth of the Rycks in the Greifswalder Bodden. The listed village is one of the oldest fishing villages on the North German Baltic Sea coast and has retained its maritime charm to this day. As soon as you enter the town, you can feel that time passes more slowly here. Thatched fishermen's cottages line the village streets, dreamy fishing and sailing boats sway in the harbor basin and rustic fish restaurants adorn the harbor promenade. only to Fishing festival Gaff rig it gets hectic when the traditional sailors head towards museum port parade and the Ryck is on fire.

Wiecker wooden bascule bridge - opened by hand

Wieck's landmark is the historic wooden bascule bridge built in 1887 by master shipbuilder Spruth based on the Dutch model. It connects the two districts of Wieck and Eldena and regulates the passage of ships into the Greifswald Museum Harbour. Even today, the 13,30 m long flaps are opened by hand on the hour. The bridge can only be used by cars with a special permit; Pedestrians, on the other hand, can cross the Ryck at any time and thus easily explore both sides of the harbour.

The character of the southern side of the harbor is shaped by the cutters and boathouses of the Wieck fishermen. They have always maintained the tradition of fishing and are part of the townscape »Long Saint Nicholas« to Greifswald. You should definitely plan a visit to the rustic fish restaurants, where plaice, zander and herring are served freshly caught. The northern side of the harbor is adorned with typical thatched roof houses, historic captain's houses, the Bugenhagen Church and the harbor office. Two height marks next to the entrance door are reminiscent of the storm surges of 1872 and 1995. Today, one prevents one modern barrier the flooding of the small village. It was put into operation in 2016 and awarded the German Engineering Prize.
