St. Spiritus

From municipal hospital to cultural center

The St. Spiritus cultural center was founded as a municipal hospital in the 13th century and is one of the most beautiful cultural and architectural monuments in Greifswald. The small courtyard houses with their workshops are arranged around the picturesque inner courtyard. Here you can attend ceramic courses or printing workshops. Until the 70s, the homes of the poor and the elderly were located here.

The main building of St. Spiritus faces Lange Straße and was built in the 18th century. Neoclassical wall and ceiling paintings can be viewed in particular in the »skewed room«. The historical chapel forms the oldest part of the former hospital. Today the upper part of the chapel houses a gallery with changing exhibitions, the lower part is used as an event venue. The inner courtyard with its courtyard houses, the gallery in the historic chapel and the crooked room can be visited during opening hours.
