The small fishing village Wieck is a district of Greifswald and is located at the mouth of the Ryck in the Danish Wiek. It is characterized by thatched fishermen's cottages, rocking fishing boats and rustic fish restaurants. The landmark is the historic wooden drawbridge, the flaps of which are still pulled by hand several times a day. A little further down the river is the Greifswald barrage, which was awarded the German Engineering Prize.
A few steps away from the Wieck harbor lies the Monastery ruins Eldena – a former Cistercian monastery. It became world famous through the paintings of the painter Caspar David Friedrich and is the place where the settlement history of Greifswald began.
