Every year on the last weekend in August, Greifswald shows its romantic side again and invites locals and visitors to take a journey back in time to the Romantic era. The historic city festival is dedicated to the city's most famous son, the romantic painter Caspar David Friedrich, and attracts visitors with a diverse supporting programme. This year, the historic market square will again be the setting for a fair from the past. One hears hoofbeats and hammer blows. Music and market people invite onlookers to an unforgettable journey into the past.
The cultural institutions of the city offer visitors numerous events and offers on this day. This year the historic city festival has the motto: PLAY like in Friedrich's time. A colorful program awaits visitors to participate and try things out. Go on a scavenger hunt in Friedrich's birthplace or play in the St. Spiritus. There is also something for everyone on the forecourt of the Pomeranian State Museum: from drawing and handicrafts with various materials to building instruments, carving and bow making, dancing and testing dexterity in an exercise course. Immerse yourself in the world of legends and fairy tales in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern in the monastery garden and become a character in a theater PLAY.
Other highlights of the day such as the historic chain carousel and many wooden games on the market square and the evening concert in the cathedral round off the eventful journey through time.
Every year, thousands of visitors take the opportunity to walk in free of charge and take in the Romantic era on this “Day with Caspar David Friedrich”. A special thank you goes to the following companies and institutions: Sparkasse Western Pomerania, WVG , Peter Warschow Collective Foundation, Greifswald municipal utilities, WGG, the university and Hanseatic city of Greifswald, Greifswald Sports Association and Art workshops.
