Pomeranian State Museum

Picture gallery with originals by Caspar David Friedrich, Runge & Co.

The Pomeranian State Museum is one of the most important cultural institutions for Pomeranian history, art and culture. Behind the classical exterior facade of the main building, the scenic, historical and cultural development of the Western Pomeranian region is presented in multimedia form on an exhibition area of 1000 m². One of the highlights of the exhibition is the magnificent Croy carpet from 1554, a unique cultural and historical testimony from the time of the Reformation.

Behind the main building is the former monastery library, through which you can get to the monastery garden - an oasis in the middle of the city that invites you to linger. A glass museum street connects the main building with the one built by JG Quistorp Picture gallery, the ua Works by Caspar David Friedrich, Philipp Otto Runge, Johan Christian Clausen Dahl, van Gogh and Max Liebermann. The picture gallery is also part of the Caspar David Friedrich tour »From the place of birth to the paintings«, which groups can book on request all year round and thus get to know the life and works of the famous painter in a combined tour.

From the Franciscan monastery to the Pomeranian State Museum

The eventful history of the museum complex goes back to the medieval beginnings of the founding of the city. In 1262, the Franciscan order built a monastery on the site of today's museum, where the monks lived and worked until the Reformation spread in 1557. In 1561, the city opened the "Schola Senatoria" (large city school) in the south and later east wing. Architect of the city school (today's picture gallery), renovated in 1798, was none other than Johann Gottfried Quistorp, drawing teacher of the famous painter Caspar David Friedrich. In the western wing of the former monastery, the city poorhouse was housed. The nickname "Grey Monastery" comes from this period, and today it houses the exhibition on Pomeranian history.

The art gallery will be redesigned over the next few years with a focus on romanticism. During the construction period, the "audience favourites" will be exhibited in the convent building. Frans Hals, Caspar David Friedrich and van Gogh are still looking forward to your visit as new "neighbors"!
